Custom Video Wall: LED vs LCD and How to Choose
A video wall can be seamless LED or tiled LCD — and the right one depends on your room, content and budget. This page explains the choice, then EKINTRY builds and quotes it.
A custom video wall is a large display built from multiple tiles into one big image — used for halls, lobbies, control rooms, retail and events. The first and biggest decision is the technology: a seamless direct-view LED wall, or a tiled LCD wall with thin bezels.
This page explains LED vs LCD, where each wins, and how to size and spec a wall. EKINTRY builds custom video walls to your space and quotes factory-direct — and points you to the right detailed page for pricing or a bespoke project.
Who custom screens are for
- Lobbies, halls, retail and event spaces.
- Control rooms and command centres.
- Houses of worship and auditoriums.
- Integrators specifying a video-wall project.
LED vs LCD video wall — the core choice
Both make a big image from tiles, but they behave differently. Direct-view LED is truly seamless (no bezel lines) and very bright, ideal for large-scale, high-impact and outdoor use, but it degrades up close. Tiled LCD has thin (<1 mm) bezel lines but delivers fine detail up close at lower upfront cost — good for control rooms and data-heavy indoor use.
- Choose LED — seamless canvas, high brightness, large or outdoor, premium impact.
- Choose LCD — cost-effective indoor detail, close-up text/maps/dashboards, bezels acceptable.
Where video walls are used
Retail storefronts, trade shows and outdoor venues favour LED for luminance and seamlessness; corporate offices, classrooms and control rooms often use LCD for detailed content and cost. Worship and event stages typically use LED for the seamless backdrop.
How to size and spec a wall
Define what people must see, from where, and under what light. Viewing distance sets the LED pixel pitch (or whether LCD detail is enough); room width sets the tile layout. For LED, the coarsest pitch your nearest viewer accepts is the most economical — use our viewing distance calculator.
When a single screen beats a video wall
If a single large panel (up to ~110″) covers the area and viewing distance, it is simpler and cheaper than a wall. Step up to a video wall when you need scale, a seamless canvas, or a custom shape a single panel cannot provide.
Common mistakes to avoid
Video-wall pitfalls:
- Choosing LED for a close-up, data-heavy control room where LCD detail is better.
- Choosing LCD where bezel lines ruin a seamless brand image — use LED.
- Buying a fine LED pitch for a wall viewed from far back.
- Costing tiles only — add the processor, mounting/rigging and spares.
| LED | Seamless, very bright, large/outdoor; softer up close |
|---|---|
| LCD | Thin bezels (<1 mm), fine detail up close, lower upfront cost |
| Best LED use | Retail, stage, lobby, outdoor, high-impact |
| Best LCD use | Control rooms, corporate, data/maps |
| Also budget | Processor, mounting/rigging, spares |

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose an LED or LCD video wall?
LED for a seamless, bright, large or outdoor canvas; LCD for cost-effective indoor detail where thin bezel lines are acceptable (control rooms, data dashboards). We advise based on your content and room.
What is a custom video wall?
A large display built from multiple tiles into one image, sized and specified to your space — seamless direct-view LED or tiled LCD.
Are LED video walls seamless?
Yes — direct-view LED tiles touch with no bezel, giving a continuous image, unlike LCD which has thin (<1 mm) bezel lines.
How big can a video wall be?
Effectively any size — tiles scale to the wall. For a single image up to ~110″, a single panel may be simpler; beyond that a wall is the answer.
What does a custom video wall cost?
It depends on technology, pitch and size, plus processor, mounting and spares. See our video wall cost and LED video wall price pages, or send your spec for a quote.
Do you handle the whole project?
We supply the wall, control system, spares and shipping factory-direct; installation is usually local with our documents and remote support.
What custom video wall configurations are possible?
Almost any — standard rectangles in any aspect ratio, tall portrait walls, ultra-wide ribbons, L-shapes and curves. Because it is built from cabinets, the configuration follows your space rather than a fixed panel size.
How much does a custom video wall display cost?
It is quoted per project by area and pixel pitch — see our LED video wall pricing page for indicative per-square-metre ranges. Send your size and we return an itemised, factory-direct quote.
Do you handle custom video wall installations?
Installation is done locally; we supply detailed drawings, spares and remote commissioning so a local AV crew installs it correctly. For large projects we can arrange on-site guidance.
